UCLA Center for Community Partnerships
Celebrates Its Sixth Year!
The UCLA Center for Community (CCP) marks its 6th year as the portal for Civic and Community Engagement and Engaged Scholarship at UCLA. Serving as a resource for faculty, staff and students and their non-profit community partners, the Center promotes existing and new partnerships in research and teaching between UCLA and Community to develop new knowledge that improves the quality of life in Los Angeles.
Our programs include:
- University – Community Partnerships – partnerships between UCLA faculty and staff and non-profit organizations are supported to develop research driven agendas that educate undergraduate and train graduate students on social problems addressing Los Angeles.
- The Ann C. Rosenfield Distinguished Community Partnership Award – recognizes model partnership collaborations with a prize awarded to both the faculty partner and the community organization.
- Distinguished Community Leader Award
- Graduate Student Research Support – the Center supports the training of the next generation of scholars through funding of graduate student researchers (GSRs) for partnership research.
- Forums and Community Knowledge Events – CCP convenes UCLA and community partners to share knowledge and research findings with stakeholders and the community.
- Undergraduate Internship Program
- CCP and Council On Research – a joint funding program with the Academic Senate Council on Research to provide special funding opportunities for engaged scholarship projects focused on Los Angeles Communities.
- Place-Based Engagement – established an office in South Los Angeles to support partnerships with office space for research, interviews, meetings, and technical support.
Accomplishments
CCP has been instrumental in positioning UCLA as a leader in the national movement embracing engaged scholarship, utilizing UCLA’s expertise in research and teaching, to attain new knowledge with community to address the needs of Los Angeles. CCP is a model for research universities throughout the country.
- In 2006, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected UCLA for its new Community Engagement Classification. UCLA was the only university in the University of California system, and the only research university in the Los Angeles area, chosen for this designation.
- In 2007, CCP hosted the second National Research Universities and Civic Engagement Conference, convening high-ranking administrators from leading R1 universities to advance engaged scholarship across higher education.
- Awarded funding by the California Endowment to develop a university – community model on the social determinants of health in South Los Angeles.
- To date, the Center has advanced over 180 collaborations between UCLA and community organizations, working on economic development; children, youth and families; and arts and cultural programs. The collaborations have been selected on a competitive basis and are designated model partnerships for their best practices and impact on Los Angeles.
- With private funding raised by UCLA, the Center has awarded over $4.8 million dollars to Los Angeles non-profit community based organizations and UCLA partners to carry out their collaborative work.
- CCP actively supports and provides funds for over 50 departments, 11 professional schools and 170 graduate student researchers at UCLA, working with 180 community organizations across Los Angeles County.
- Over $1.5 million has been provided to faculty for 175 Graduate Student Researchers to support their partnership research.
