Abstract:
The UCLA Gambling Studies Program along with the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) are collaborating to document the impact of gambling on Asian communities in Los Angeles.
The project will raise awareness about problem gambling within Los Angeles Asian communities and determine the impact of gambling on Asian communities in Los Angeles with an emphasis on documenting its effects on children, youth and families.
The project will also characterize differences in gambling patterns which will identify Asian communities who are at-risk to develop gambling problems. To accomplish this, the following activities are planned:
We intend to distribute gambling screening instruments and the UCLA Gambling Survey to Asian community service providers. We will conduct community forums with Asian communities to discuss the impact of gambling and conduct roundtable discussions with community leaders to discuss the impact of gambling. A website will be developed to educate Asian communities in Los Angeles about the impact of gambling.
Results from the surveys, forums and discussions will yield a wealth of information about the community needs and concerns related to gambling. This will lead to a more informed way of planning culturally appropriate awareness, education and intervention programs for problem gambling.
