Abstract:
Team Up seeks to improve the overall educational experience of Ujima Village residents while providing UCLA students with valuable service learning and volunteer experience in the greater Los Angeles community. UCLA students and faculty will work closely with young Ujima residents and their parents in a variety of ways, by helping with homework on a regular basis, teaching basic computer skills, visiting museums and libraries, and organizing arts and crafts events. Team Up also seeks to help teenage youths and adults prepare for post-secondary education by providing tutoring and academic counseling. In particular, the project will offer a variety of workshops designed to prepare students and their families for a college education, including such topics as standardized test preparation, computer and writing skills, education in the arts, financial aid and scholarships, and applications and admissions criteria. Meetings will be held both in South Los Angeles and at UCLA, where Ujima residents will have multiple opportunities to explore the campus and to benefit from guided access to its tremendous resources. Finally, the faculty-in-residence who are actively involved in the project are committed to continue to offer fiat lux seminars that involve Ujima Village, such as the two offered in 2004-05.
