2008 Rosenfield Award Ceremony
The Rosenfield Distinguished Community Partnership Prize ceremony
was held April 22, 2008 at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Center on the UCLA
campus. The prize is designed to publicly recognize ongoing or one-time collaborations
between UCLA faculty, or staff and community residents or non-profit organizations
that have already enhanced the quality of life in Southern California communities
in meaningful and measurable ways. Winning partnerships must demonstrate
the importance of connecting academic knowledge to community knowledge.
Each of the five annual awards is made jointly to the principal UCLA participant and the community partner, thereby publicly recognizing and uniting the two halves of the UCLA in LA partnership. This year's recipients were Dr. Joan Rosenbaum Asarnow and community partner Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Famly Services; Dr. Yoram Cohen and community partner Committee to Bridge the Gap; Dr. Marjorie Kagawa-Singer and community partner Families in Good Health/St. Mary’s; Professor Jose Luis Valenzuela and community partner Latino Theater Company at THE NEW LATC; and, Dr. Gail Wyatt and community partner To Help Everyone Clinic, Inc. A Special Recognition Award was conferred on Adjunct Professor David Gjertson and the Los Angeles Aquatic Search and Rescue Unit, Inc. a non-profit organization which works in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Services Detail of the Special Enforcement Bureau.
The 2008 Community Leader Award is conferred each year in recognition of a civic/community leader’s extraordinary commitment to the well being of Los Angeles and for nurturance and support of UCLA’s relationship with the broader community. This year's recipient was Elise Buik, President/CEO, Greater United Way Los Angeles.
The awards are made possible through the Ann C. Rosenfield Fund at the UCLA Foundation under the direction of David A. Leveton.
